So we recently adopted a beagle mix, 1 year old. He is not neutered , we already have plans to do so. We are looking for advice and input on how much of this is typical puppy/young dog behavior and if any of it might be a real aggression problem. Willing to be an open book if it helps you give us advice, I'll answer your questions. He is cuddly, energetic, house trained. The issues we are seeing: He absolutely refuses to give up things he shouldn't be eating, ie a piece of paper that was dropped on the floor or a stray tissue. When we try to get these things from him, he actually growls and tries to bite us. When someone comes to the door, he will not back away from the door and sometimes try to bite us when we try and get him to sit. This isn't teething, like the nipping when his chew toys are taken away. He actually whips his head around to try and bite me. Also... We were told he does well on the leash. (we adopted him from another family) MAYBE he is just getting used to us, after all a new family is a big change. However, he will absolutely not walk on the leash. He insists on running, which doesn't work well in the ice. I try to get him to walk beside me or at least WALK instead of run and he will not keep his feet on the ground, so it feels like he is being choked and even sounds like it. We're headed to go and buy him the gentle leader, and are hoping this will help some. Admittedly, we're going to need some obedience help here. I prefer someone who would come into our place and do this. He responds to wait, go, usually does sit and out, and sometimes off. I really like this dog and would like to do everything I can for him. He's still a young guy and a total sweetheart. Please note before replying, that I'm REALLY trying here and I understand some , even most of this might just be him being new to us. I just want to be sure I'm doing the right thing.
