Does your job increase the amount of happiness in the world? Would you like it to? KaBOOM! (kaboom.org) is a DC-based national non-profit with a simple vision: A great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. We provide strong benefits, a fun work atmosphere, and the chance to make a difference in children’s lives. We’re looking for our first in-house developer – someone who will provide technical leadership for all of our Web development efforts. We need someone with expertise in Rails, since significant chunks of our site are Rails-based. But we need other skills, too, from database architecture to front-end coding to social networks to content management systems. Here's a snapshot of your first year:  Learn all about the various parts of our site, which have been developed on multiple platforms by third-party companies.  Put together an architectural framework to guide us as we gradually take control of our own destiny.  Take a lead role as we improve key products such as the Playspace Finder (http://playspacefinder.kaboom.org). Write the code, but also take a strong role in defining functionality and UI.  Take a lead role in determining the best content management system for KaBOOM! to use. Then take a lead role in implementing it.  Manage legacy relationships with third-party vendors/consultants.  Respond to many ad-hoc requests and implement many Web site tweaks, including lots that needed to be done yesterday.  Manage at least one medium-sized development effort that is dropped in our lap with too little time to achieve what’s been asked. • Work longer and harder than planned; and enjoy doing so! Our ideal candidate has all of the following qualifications and qualities; our eventual hire will have MOST of them: • Formal software-development training: A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems, or equivalent experience. • At least 5 years of professional experience developing Web applications on a range of platforms, including work with a content-management system. • Specific experience building Web sites in Rails. (Give us URLs, please!) • Working knowledge of Unix operating systems, including experience with the command line interface. • Command of XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, and basic web usability standards. Ability to write optimized front-end code based on a Photoshop design. • A firm grasp of relational database design and normalization. • A passion for open-source software. Contributions to one or more open-source projects. • Experience working with product managers to formulate good requirements (clear, realistic). • Ability to handle fast-changing requirements with a minimum of frustration. • Ability to multi-task and hit firm deadlines, coupled with a fanatical attention to detail. • Experience managing other developers. • Great communication skills, both writing and speaking. • Great social skills. • Active participation in the DC-area developer / technology community To Apply: Send us your resume and attach a cover note w/salary requirements; be sure to tell us your favorite piece of playground equipment! Email your information to hr@kaboom.org or fax to 202-659-2685. Please indicate in the subject line of your e-mail the title of the position. KaBOOM! is an equal opportunity employer. We reserve the right to remove or change a job posting at any time. Location: KaBOOM! Principals only. Recruiters, please don't contact this job poster. Please, no phone calls about this job! Please do not contact job poster about other services, products or commercial interests. virginia
