Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Farm Research Campus is looking for part-time laboratory assistants to harvest Drosophila nervous systems. Principal Responsibilities: The laboratory assistants will be in training for one month as temporary employees. For hire, candidates must meet our standards for dissection speed and quality. We expect continued improvement over the first several months and superb dissection thereafter. The laboratory assistants will dissect flies using fine forceps and microscope for 20 hours per week (1:00-5:00PM Monday - Friday). The assistants must also maintain dissection tools, prepare solutions, enter data on a computer workstation, and sort organisms prior to dissection. Preferred Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or philosophy of biology * Undergraduate research experience, especially working with Drosophila * Interest in medicine or neuroscience research * Good communication and record keeping skills * Excellent vision (not color blind, astigmatism correction via contact lenses is ok) * Possess focus, steady hands and patience * Can concentrate in a lively environment * Computer savy * Able to use a barcode scanner * Team oriented Additional Information: For consideration, tell us why doing fly dissection appeals to you.
