The senior scientists supports the Wind and Hydropower Technologies Program (WHTP) by assisting in formulating, implementing, and executing effective and timely Federal research and development programs. The candidate must understand a wide range of wind turbine techinical challenges and assists in developing an approach to overcome performance, reliability, operation, and maintenance issues for utility-scale and distributed end-user wind turbines. Tasks will also include the following:
* Support the Technology Viability team in program direction improving wind turbine technology through assessments of current and planned systems, identification of technology improvement opportunities for large and distributed wind turbines.
* Provide independent evaluation of the value and effectiveness of current DOE programs for improving wind turbine design, performance, and systems operation.
* Help develop more effective and timely Federally-funded wind programs at DOE national laboratories. Evaluating and improve national laboratory research and testing programs and their suitability for accomplishing urgent industry needs.
* Assist leadership in federal civil servant roles and responsibilities including team-building, leadership development, mentoring and focusing all DOE WHTP programs on the urgency of industry issues and the return on investment for taxpayers.
* Participate in Gearbox Reliability Collaborative, American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and other professional technical conferences and workshops.
* Provide frequent and clear communication and documentation of finding and recommendations.
* Assist with General Department responsibilities: Review program and project reports, respond to public requests for information, goal tracking, congressional inquiries, and development of program plans (i.e. Annual Operating Plan, Mid-year Performance Plan, EERE Strategic Plan).
* Other duties as assigned by Team Lead or Program Manager.
Qualifications:
Experience in material science, electrochemistry, physical chemistry, metallurgy, mechanical, chemical or electrical engineering is required. Experience in analyzing respective EERE Program(s)' technologies for various applications is desired as is experience in research, development and demonstration of related EERE Program(s)' production, delivery and storage technologies. The applicant must be able to demonstrate expertise in the area of respective EERE Program(s)' technology showing a record of project experience, technical publications, patents, and speaking engagements. Experience (at least 3 - 5 years) in directing research, development and demonstration in respective EERE Program(s) in a university, national laboratory, or industry setting is desired.

Required Technical Skills:
Expert knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Access is required. Working knowledge of Outlook, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and other various software helpful.
