Spectrum is seeking a Science Writer to join our team in Washington, DC. Interested applicants should apply by emailing their resume and cover letter, with salary requirements, to: careers@spectrumscience.com Duties & Responsibilities: •Communicate breaking science research appearing in journals and scientific meetings to a general or scientific audience as well as the desire and ability to interact effectively with professional journalists in broadcast, internet, and print media •Maintain up-to-date knowledge on major scientific and technical developments •Conduct interviews with scientists, clinicians, engineers by telephone, in person or by e-mail correspondence •Prepare press releases and reports for various clientele, including research institutes, and professional societies •Produce completed high-quality written work in an independent fashion under tight deadlines •Regularly interact with journalists at a variety of news media, pitch stories, and help organize and operate newsrooms for clients as needed •Regularly interact with clients regarding program oversight and project implementation •Demonstrate strategic thinking to provide counsel, or leveraging research or technology to various clients •Assist in leading client meetings and review reports on outcomes •Edit the writing of junior staff for materials, client reports •Provide training to staff on science and health topics, research breakthroughs and other issues as needed •Provide input on client message development and spokesperson training •Oversee client background research •Develop current client and new business program plans and budgets •Oversee client program budgets and invoices •Manage vendor relationships •Assist in company management projects – intern oversight, internal resources, etc. Requirements: •Bachelor’s degree in Science, English, Journalism, or a related field is required •Master’s degree and/or PhD in a scientific field is preferred •5 years of science writing experience is required, preferably doing reporting and writing about medicine or science for a magazine, newspaper, newsletter or website •Solid writing and editing skills, good news judgment is required •Experience within a healthcare and/or research environment is required •Must be imaginative and able to see the implications of scientific discoveries •Ability to learn quickly and capitalize on science education to rapidly master the basics of various technical fields and communicate effectively with scientists and engineers •Must possess excellent time management skills, be organized and self-motivated •Good verbal communication skills are essential when conducting interviews •The ability to work on several projects simultaneously and to work in a team environment is required •Ability to mentor and manage junior staff, as well as client budgets •Journalism, communications, and/or public relations experience is also preferred Company Description: Spectrum is a full-service communications agency that specializes in science and health.
