Position Title: Construction Material Testing & Inspection Manager Location: Idaho The following is used as a representative description and is not restrictive as to the duties required. Project and Staff Coordination/Management: Recruit, train and retain high quality technical staff. Supervise, direct and administer staff to accomplish project related goals in a service orientated and professional manner. Coordinate staff to be commensurate to the project and client needs, thus reducing STRATA’s liability. Maintain an efficient workflow between laboratory, field, engineering and administrative personnel to fulfill client and project schedules and budgets. Provide and support a professional atmosphere where communication between staff members reduces errors and establishes training opportunities and personal responsibility. Manage all aspects of testing projects from project procurement, financial responsibility, employee applications, client interaction, and project solutions. Technical: Perform, direct and supervise engineering and construction material testing fieldwork as necessary. This may include: traveling to other regional offices, carrying specimens (i.e. heavy bags of soil/rock samples, concrete cylinders, etc.), performing laboratory and field testing of samples and observing and logging test pits and borings. Work with appropriately registered professional engineers to interpret subsurface data and incorporate subsurface conditions into project analyses and construction recommendations. Communicate accurately and timely, both written and verbally, with clients, co-workers and engineering staff. Perform material testing calculations in accordance with the test procedures for asphalt, steel, concrete, fireproofing, soil and other construction materials. Prepare and review necessary field observation and laboratory test reports in a liability conscientious manner consistent with STRATA’s quality systems and client expectations. Generate proposals and reports commensurate with industry standards, client expectations and STRATA’s standard of service and care. Facilitate review by a STRATA principal/senior engineer with the appropriate engineering or testing experience. Establish and coordinate appropriate laboratory testing to meet the field conditions and project needs. Communicate technical information verbally, electronically, and in final report or letter form in the approved format. Project Management: Develop thorough and detailed project scopes and budgets. Manage project budgets and schedules to be efficient and profitable. Maintain client communications over the duration of the projects, during procurement and project follow-up including collection of accounts due. Be responsible for project setup, coordinating employees and subcontractors, and exploration programs. Maintain the highest level of client service and professionalism throughout projects and your staff. Business Development: Be responsible for the financial objectives of the department commensurate to the corporate goals for revenue, profit, and growth. These objectives and goals will be established through the annual budgeting process, which will require involvement from the Area Manager and corporate officers. Expand, maintain and take ownership in developing our client base in testing, inspection, engineering, and environmental services. Annually present to the Area Manager and/or Board of Directors your business objectives and marketing plan to accomplish those objectives. Identify and pursue new markets in association with the corporate and office goals. Maintain active membership in at least one professional organization such as ACI, ICC, ASFE, etc. . Prepare and present statements of qualifications or technical presentations for project procurement and attend marketing meetings with clients and local, federal or state officials. Risk Management: Use sound testing, inspection and business practices and procedures to help reduce STRATA’s and our client’s risk. Engineering and material testing standards of care are to be utilized at all times. Develop risk management skills by studying materials and attending project management seminars. STRATA will provide the study materials and opportunity to attend the seminars. Study materials will generally be prepared by the American Society of Foundation Engineers (ASFE). Internal project manager seminars are typically held annually at one of the STRATA offices. Strictly adhere to STRATA’s loss prevention policies including, but not limited to: maintaining the geotechnical and material testing standards of practice, adherence to STRATA’s Quality Systems Manual (QSM), following internal report review protocol, proactive engagement of problems with innovative solutions, thorough client discussion regarding risks and cost to benefit ratios, and applying ASFE, Terra and Fundamentals of Professional Practice (FOPP) concepts. Financial Management: Develop monthly and annual business plans to successfully accomplish corporate and regional objectives. Ability to read and interpret monthly and quarterly financial reports and to make necessary office, department and employee changes to facilitate financial success. Ability to assess manpower requirements and make adjustments to achieve office objectives. Be accountable to the Area Manager and Board of Directors for your department’s performance. Ability to apply accounting principles and practices to achieve project, division and office profit goals through adequate billing and budget management. Ability to prepare annual material testing and inspection budgets and monitor the budgets monthly. Ability to analyze and prepare investment proposals for new office or corporate endeavors that will convey the cost to benefit ratio and time value of money. Ability to calculate test results in accordance with test procedures. Focused work patterns with appropriate management review procedure Physical demands may include: Climbing into test pits, hiking on steep mountainous terrain, carrying heavy soil/rock samples, carrying equipment such as: nuclear density meter, wheel barrel with concrete, etc. All of the above may include lifting and carrying items in excess of 75 pounds.
