If the person selected is not affiliated with the Alaska Public Service Employees – Local 71 union, he or she must become a member in good standing within 31 days of beginning work. DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Parks & Recreation Hours of Work: Varies - 4/10's Monday through Sunday; 6am - 4:30pm. Positions are Full-time, Seasonal until approximately 9/28/09. Preference will be given to returning seasonal employees. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Greenhouse plant production and maintenance, environment monitoring and control, tropical plant care, maintenance of the public greenhouse, carrying heavy plants, loading and delivering to planting site, planting and maintaining flowers. Landscape and grounds maintenance including tree/shrub planting, watering, fertilization, pruning, weed control, mulch, and grounds maintenance to be neat and attractive. Pick up trash and litter. Maintenance of all tools and equipment used. Plant and maintain the flower beds within the Municipality of Anchorage facilities and keep the surrounding grounds maintained and clean. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / SUBSTITUTIONS / SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Three (3) months experience in greenhouse, horticulture, or landscape maintenance work, and in the use of associated equipment. Must possess a valid driver's license. NOTICE If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant’s Alaska Driver’s License and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska Driver’s License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant. Interviews will include written, verbal, and practical examinations. The exams include items such as (but not limited to) lifting weight requirements, identification of plant material, identification & proper usage of tools & equipment including driving vehicles & equipment. Seasonal employees accrue seasonal leave at a maximum rate of 5.31 hours per pay period, exclusive of overtime and prorated on actual hours worked, based on an 80-hour pay period. Unused seasonal leave is cashable at 100% redemption rate at the termination of seasonal employment. Accrued seasonal leave expires with the termination of seasonal employment and cannot be carried forward into another employment period. If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160[10]). Accordingly it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from date requested. The processing fee of $54.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable), is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES Prefer experience in use of pruners, chain saws, trimmers, chipper, and truck with trailer operation. Must be able to work with other staff members as a team.
