If the person selected is not affiliated with the Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA), he or she must become a member in good standing within 31 days of beginning work. DEPARTMENT: Planning HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., some night meetings and occasional weekend work. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Working in the Physical Planning Division, develop and present 2-D and 3-D graphical illustrations of conceptual site plans, urban design standards and concepts, prepare renderings to illustrate form-based code, building design features, street typologies, mixed-use districts, and other planning concepts for public workshops and publications prepared by the Planning Department. Will work closely with Planning staff on a variety of projects, including code rewrite, user's guide, design guidelines, comprehensive plans, and district plans. Provide assistance to platting and zoning staff with reviews of major rezoning, platting, site plan, and conditional use applications. At associate level will work under guidance of senior personnel; at senior level will take lead and project management role on more complex projects. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / SUBSTITUTIONS / SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a related field and two years as an Assistant Planner with the Municipality of Anchorage or the equivalent elsewhere. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Substitution: Additional planning experience may substitute for the required degree on a year for year basis. A Master's degree in Urban Planning or related field may substitute for the planning experience for up to one year. NOTICE If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant’s Alaska Driver’s License and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska Driver’s License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant. If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment. This is a “flex” position. Employees are generally hired at the entry/trainee level. When the employee meets the minimum qualifications of the Senior Planner position, grade 16 (higher level job class) and management determines performance is at the full proficiency level, the employee may be “flexed” to the higher level job class. The salary range for the Senior Planner, grade 16 position is: $29.24 - $37.30 per hour KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to speak, hear, and interact with others. Ability to see print up close and to distinguish colors. Position requires reading, writing, editing, evaluating, interpreting, and organizing skills. Must be able to sit for long periods, to walk, to lift 10 - 25 pounds, and to handle repetitive motion of hands/fingers. Driving a regular passenger car is also required occasionally. Strongly prefer applicants with experience with Auto-CAD experience. Prefer applicants with basic GIS/mapping skills and experience using Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or Sketch-Up software. The ability to use various software programs to produce graphics and technical illustrations is a fundamental component of this position.
