WEDNESDAY 7/8/09 Application available at www.co.missoula.mt.us Complete job description available upon request to the Department of Human Resources DEFINITION: Provides crisis counseling and criminal justice support and advocacy to primary and secondary victims of personal injury crimes for Missoula County Crime Victim Advocate (CVA) Program. Conducts outreach and training on issue of intimate partner violence, sexual violence and victimization. REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK: (The following illustrate typical duties. They are not all inclusive or restrictive.) ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Assesses needs, assists in crisis intervention and provides emergency legal advocacy for crime victims. Makes client referrals. May coordinate services available to victims. Provides initial crisis counseling. Serves as liaison for victims. Organizes community members and professionals to develop services for victims. Provides assistance in completing and filing Temporary Orders of Protection (TOP), Victim Impact Statements, other documents. Provides support to victims during investigations. Keeps victim informed of progress of case. May attend legal proceedings and hearings with victims. Explains Crime Victims’ Compensation Program and assists in completing applications for reimbursement. Completes quarterly reports. Provides training on CVA Program and issues of intimate partner violence and sexual assault. Promotes visibility and accessibility of position. Conducts outreach and training to rural communities and other underserved populations. Develops and implements media campaigns, writes newspaper articles and PSAs, contributes information for grant reporting and proposals. OTHER DUTIES: Performs related work as required or directed. PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: Work primarily performed in office setting but involves frequent trips to city and county offices. May require trips to rural areas of Missoula and Mineral Counties. Work involves crisis counseling with people who have experienced violence creating potential for significant emotional stress for employee and possible exposure to violent incidents. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Requires Bachelors degree in Social Work or closely related field. Requires two years experience in social service field involving community organizing, advocacy and crisis intervention related to intimate partner violence, sexual assault or other areas of victimization, (ex. rape, assault, child abuse). Completion of specialized advocacy training, (e.g. YWCA or Crime Victim Advocate training) desirable. Experience or training in Montana's criminal justice system desirable. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires passing background investigation conducted by Missoula County Sheriff's Department. During first year of employment, completion of YWCA or CVA intimate partner violence training program will be required.
