Poison Information Specialist- Pharmacist
When you work as a Poison Information Specialist- Pharmacist with the Utah Poison Control Center, you have the opportunity to work side by side with other world class professionals, develop your skills, and grow your career.
Working as a Poison Information Specialist- Pharmacist is for those who have a Bachelor's or Doctorate degree in Pharmacy, a strong desire to participate in educating health care professionals and students about toxicology, and who have outstanding communication skills and will enjoy working in a non-bedside patient care setting communicating constantly with people on the phone.
This unique opportunity will give you the chance to utilize your exceptional communication skills by asking the right questions and gathering sound information from callers in order to properly assess and provide assistance during their poisoning emergency.

Qualifications
1 - Llicensure as a Pharmacist (or the ability to obtain a pharmacist licensure within 4 months of hire) in the State of Utah.
2 - Current national certification as a Specialist in Poison Information or the ability to obtain the certification within 2 exam cycles
Knowledge of human pathophysiology, clinical pharmacology and drug information; and demonstrated human relation, organization and effective communication skills.
Poison Information Specialist certification requires passing an examination. Eligibility for the exam requires licensure as a Pharmacist or Registered Nurse, working 2000 hours in a Poison Information Center and fielding 2000 poison exposure calls. The certification must be maintained through regular recertification.
Responsibilities
1. Rapidly assessing poisoning exposures by collecting thorough histories over the phone and then applying toxicology knowledge to make appropriate assessments and treatment plans.
2. Answering caller inquiries with complete, concise and relevant recommendations for action in terms that are appropriate to the calling party's level of understanding.
3. Providing verbal and written sound clinical information and management advice in response to emergency and informational telephone calls.
4. Initiating follow-up calls to assess patient status and altering management recommendations as appropriate.
5. Investigating case history, researching medical literature and consulting appropriate sources to provide informed and proper treatment and triage recommendations and developing protocols that are medically and economically appropriate.
6. Communicating with on-call staff concerning medical and toxicological-related issues.
7. Preparing information for and attending continuing education activities, such as weekly case conference meetings, in-service sessions and staff meetings.
8. Based on the seriousness of the incident and the caller's level of cognition, independently determining whether the poisoning incident can be handled by the UPCC or whether the poisoning victim should be seen by a health care provider.
9. Participating in ongoing training of staff and precepting PharmD students, emergency medicine residents and pediatric emergency medicine fellows.
10. Participating in professional education activities.
11. Participating in a toxicology course offered at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy.
12. Participating in antidote, lab, and emergency capability surveys of hospitals statewide.
Work Schedule
The Utah Poison Control Center operates 24 hours a day. Poison Information Specialists work a schedule rotation of 12 hours shifts on days, evenings, nights and weekends.
