Health and Safety Technician Colaska, Inc., one of the largest construction companies in Alaska, is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Technician to assist in administering policies and procedures relating to health and safety issues. This is not an entry-level position; the ideal candidate will have the knowledge and experience to make an immediate impact on the health and safety program. Location: The position will be based out of Anchorage AK, but will require heavy travel (~70%) throughout the state of Alaska, including overnight trips. Qualifications: A minimum of five (5) years experience in the Health & Safety function or a related field. Must have a broad knowledge of industrial positions and equipment in order to formulate preventative measures and investigatory practices. Familiar with applicable federal, state and local rules and regulations as required by OSHA, MSHA, DOT and other regulatory agencies. Familiar with state worker’s compensation programs, dealing with insurance companies as related to accidents and injuries and general safety and health policies and practices. Ability to interact with others and positively influence their behavior in an organized manner while managing multiple daily activities between office and field work. Ability to write and speak clearly and effectively to all levels of employees, both individually and in large groups. Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree (BA) from four-year college or university; or five years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. OSHA and MSHA instructor’s certification will be required within six (6) months of starting position. This position requires the representative to conduct intensive on-site inspections of company facilities and requires frequent travel throughout Alaska, including areas which are extremely rural and remote. Representatives perform all of these actions while being exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including inclement weather and extreme heat and cold. Key Responsibilities: • Assist in planning, implementation and enforcement of safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal agencies, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT), etc. • Assist in planning and implementation of various training programs to educate managers and employees on issues related to work site hazards and safe driving practices. • Prepares, studies and analyzes various causes of industrial accidents and injuries in an effort to identify potential health hazards to company personnel for use by both the Company and outside agencies. Maintains logs and incident reports of such accidents and their causes for monitoring purposes. • Inspects company operations to detect existing and/ or potential accident and health hazards. Determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented. • Participates in the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for company use in preparation for various hearings, lawsuits and insurance investigations. • Compiles and submits accident reports required by regulatory agencies. • Assist with the administration of the worker’s compensation program, including working with the insurance carrier to reduce employee lost time incidents. • Maintains safety files and records and reports. • Works to reduce the number of worker’s compensation claims filed and assists in close existing claims. • Works with all managers and employees to meet organizational safety goals set each year • Schedules and monitors Motor Vehicle Report matrix for all employees who drive company vehicles and performs audits to evaluate the effectiveness of the training program. • Assesses new developments in the health and safety fields and monitor changes in federal, state or local laws and regulations that may be applicable to company operations. • Identifies target areas in region for improvement and establishes long-range accident prevention and cost-control objectives.
