Job Title: Staff Attorney
Supervisor: President/CEO and ANJC Board Chair
Salary: DOE
FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-time Regular
POSITION SUMMARY: This position is a highly responsible position providing legal advice and counsel to Alaska Native/American Indian victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. The staff attorney provides victims with guidance and information related to their rights and refers victims to community agencies and support services. This position is under dual supervision.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide effective assistance to prevent further victimization as a result of becoming a victim while maintaining confidentiality and integrity of the victims rights.
Provide timely emergency legal assistance services in accordance to the victims wishes.
Develop and assist with technical and educational victim support to include; but not limited to court filings, research both in the court and through the internet.
Assists in the preparation of legal documents, government forms and all other elements in a case to assure the client successfully obtains legal benefit or remedy.
Collaborates with other staff persons in the promotion of education and safety of the clients.
Maintains confidential files without compromising the clients rights, safety or wishes.
Meets with the victim to obtain information, records and provides court accompaniment as needed.
Deals effectively with a variety of personalities and situations requiring sound judgment.
Attends conferences and workshops related to domestic violence. Networks with other service providers to stay abreast of ongoing efforts to address victim assistance programs.
Participates in ANJC Family Law/Outreach Clinics.
Maintains a positive working relation with ANJC staff and supports management of the organization.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
Demonstrated capacity to handle multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines.
Must be knowledgeable with Alaska Civil Rules and State Statutes.
Experience working with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking; including laws and statutes governing their rights, protections and remedy.
Demonstrated highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Must be able to work independently and be results oriented.
Must be well versed in the court process with knowledge of how to correctly and efficiently complete court documents and the filing procedures.
Excellent communication skills in order to identify needed social and community services; make appropriate referrals and advocate for client services, while maintaining interagency relations.
Must possess strong working knowledge and demonstrated ability with PC applications; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a member in good standing with the Alaska Bar Association.
Minimum of two years relevant work experience preferred.
Must be proficient with PC applications and willing to learn new advanced software applications.
Knowledge of Alaska Native and/or community resources with demonstrated experience working with Alaska Native people and has an understanding of their values and belief systems, and the ability to provide culturally competent services.
Valid Alaska drivers license and reliable transportation is required.
