Job seekers beware of the companies that are offering jobs with independent contractor status, know your rights. There is currently a job posting asking for specific skills, listing a 6 day a week work week and paying 15.00 an hour with no benefits. They claim that there is "some flexibility" within the work day hours but then state the hours of operation which is way over 40 hours a week. They are essentially asking you to work their hours, under their direction for 15.00 an hour with no benefits and you are responsible for paying all of your taxes and must have a GET license (this will come out to approx. 7.00 hr with no medical!). If you are hired as an independent contractor, the "employer" cannot dictate your days/hours/schedule, cannot tell you how to do the job, cannot evaluate your performance, etc. It is a Hawaii State law that if you work more than 20 hours a week, you must be given health insurance. These business owners are trying to get out of that by offering independent contractor status; don't be taken advantage of.
