Job Summary: Read Aloud America believes children should be read to starting at birth. The years between birth and age 5 are critical to language acquisition and development. RAP, the Read Aloud Program, promotes a love of books and engages very young children in read-aloud and reading readiness activities in a non-threatening, informal manner during each RAP session. RAP sessions take place six times during one school semester. The Toddler Reader will engage toddlers ages 1-2 in fun, developmentally appropriate activities that stimulate an interest in language and books. All program materials are provided by Read Aloud America. RAA is currently seeking a Toddler Reader to read aloud at 1 (one) RAP program in Waianae in Fall 2009. Schedule can be viewed at http://www.readaloudamerica.org/Fall2009_000.htm. Read Aloud America will provide all materials and training necessary. The RAP program has six evening sessions, every other week, 5:45 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. Interested applicants should send a resume, a letter describing qualifications, and a list of at least three references to read@readaloudamerica.org. Responsibilities: Conduct six (6) toddler class sessions at the designated school site over one semester • Follow prescribed protocol to encourage interaction with toddlers • Disseminate parent information during activities • Manage class materials (puppets, books, c.d. player, etc.) • Engage children in reading aloud, songs, other activities • Oversee safety of toddlers at each session Qualifications: • Experience working with children ages 0 to 5 • Coursework in early childhood education or equivalent experience • Familiarity with books appropriate for children 0 to 5 years • Patience, flexibility, positive attitude • Love of reading Time Commitment: • Toddler Readers arrive at RAP sessions at 5:45 PM and remain until all toddlers have been returned to their parents, approximately 7:15 PM. • All RAP readers are invited to stay until the end of the session and enjoy the pizza and prize drawings, but attending this part of the session is not mandatory.
