Oceanic Institute, an affiliate of Hawai'i Pacific University, is a not-for-profit research and development organization dedicated to marine aquaculture, biotechnology, and coastal resource management. OI works with community, industry, government and academic partners, and non-governmental organizations to benefit the state, the nation, and the world. We are looking for a Research Assistant. This a temporary position through December 2009 JOB SUMMARY Work in a bio-secure environment to assist in microbiological experiments, maintenance of algal cultures, and program research activities. Position may require outdoor work, physical exertions, exposure to sunlight, working with chemicals, and flexible hours. This is a temporary position lasting approximately from Date of Hire through 12/31/09. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma, 1-2 years biological college-level course work, and experience with molecular techniques as outlined. General experience with microbial sample handling including clean sampling techniques, sonication, and filtration is required. Proficiency with DAPI staining and fluorescent microscopy for bacterial enumeration is also required. Must be available to work flexible schedule; enjoy working with marine life; work independently and under supervision PREFERRED QUALIFICATION: BA/BS degree in relevant discipline preferred. DUTIES: 1. Fluorescent tagging and enumeration of bacterial samples to estimate bacterial biomass. 2. Assist with Fluorescent in situ Hybridization assays and incubations to measure bacterial heterotrophy. . 3. Assist with automated nutrient chemistry for the analysis of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus 4. Assist in daily maintenance and monitoring of algal cultures as needed including sampling, data entry, tank cleaning and other outdoor activities. 5. Ordering of research materials and supplies 6.
