This position is responsible for data management and processing for Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM). The area is managed jointly by three co-trustees, the Departments of Commerce and the Interior and the State of Hawai‘i, and represents a cooperative conservation approach to protecting the entire ecosystem of this culturally and ecologically sensitive area. Position reports to Program Manager. RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES: • Key contributor in the development of documents and summary understanding of the condition and processes that describe the PMNM. • Collaborate with software engineers, database administrators, managers and scientists to design, populate and assess scientific and business data repositories, metadata repositories and reporting and distribution systems. • Demonstrated ability to support the development and documentation of key management questions and the ability to integrate available data, information and methods to address the questions is required. • Ability to meet deadlines set by manager and/or clients. • Ability to manage projects, tasks and priorities is required. • Requires communicating, interacting, and working cooperatively with others. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • A Master’s degree in a related discipline (marine sciences / information processing) and three years experience is required. • In lieu of a Master’s degree candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience will be considered. SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: • Background or deep familiarity with marine science. • Demonstrated abilities in the management, analysis and integration of environmental information, data and datasets. • Interdisciplinary knowledge of marine sciences including biology, physics, and chemistry is desirable. • Knowledge of some subset of the following is desirable: marine mammals, fisheries science, oceanography, biogeography, climatology, coral reef ecology, ornithology, monitoring statistics and data visualization. • Experience with data management, data extraction, quality assurance and documentation development is required. • Ability to develop SQL queries, summarize data and information and communicate the results in writing and in presentations is important. • Experience in data visualization and analysis using tools such as SAS, JMP, and ArcGIS is desirable. • Experience with relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, PostgreSQL is desirable. • Experience with Microsoft Office tools including Access, Excel and Word, or equivalent is desirable. • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communications skills. • Ability to communicate well with team members and clients. Work Hours: Schedule is determined by the needs of the business. Regular and punctual attendance is required for this position. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required to meet deadlines. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This is sedentary work which requires the following physical activities: sitting, reaching, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment, but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels from high-speed computer printers and other peripherals. Work involves daily operation of personal computer equipment. Duties may also involve occasional stooping, crawling and lifting of up to 25 lbs. Occasional travel to various worksites may also be required, depending on assignment.
