The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain Q Clearance. The Nanomaterials Sciences Department has an opening for a technologist to participate in basic research focused on understanding materials properties for corrosion and energy storage electrodes. Characterization techniques include electrochemical scanning probe microscopy, polarization, voltametry, and impedance spectroscopy. In addition to the electrochemical measurements, assisting in standard materials characterization is also performed, using a wide variety of analytical techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The work also involves thin film growth using electron beam evaporation, including maintenance of the UHV film deposition system. In addition to performing measurements and maintaining the laboratories, a growing participation in the analysis of results is desirable, where the level of contribution will be governed primarily by the person's capabilities and interest. Skills/ Requirements • Associate degree in chemistry or materials science, with demonstrated experience in electrochemistry. • Experience with chemical handling, processing, electrolyte synthesis and standard electrochemical measurements. • Experience and familiarity with vacuum systems and thin film deposition. • Familiarity with desktop computers and standard office software packages. • Ability to work independently, while integrating effectively into a teaming environment. • Strong communication and organizational skills are essential. DESIRED: • Bachelors degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science with demonstrated experience in electrochemistry. • Prior experience in chemical or materials research, including electrochemical characterization. Experience and familiarity with materials characterization techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning probe microscopy techniques (AFM, STM). • Demonstrated problem solving capabilities. • Experience with automated data acquisition operation, maintenance and development, including LabView programming capabilities.
